Potty Trained:
Your new puppy will be crate trained and potty trained. Yet, no puppy is fully reliable.
The puppy is being weaned to a new brand of food, new environment, maybe a different time zone. Bowel movement and urination schedule has been changed. Your new puppy is not reliable. After a week or two you have figured out the puppy's potty schedule that works for the both of you. Puppies are like a two year old child. They need to go potty often. Keep an eye on your puppy if left free walking around in your home. When the puppy nose drops and starts sniffing is a sign. There are many other signs to watch for.
HOW I POTTY TRAIN A PUPPY:
If puppy is in a play pen or a crate, I will take outside either carrying or on the leash. (All weather conditions), I say," puppy's name, -go potty". If the puppy goes potty, I praise verbally and pet. I say, "Good (name of puppy). (Happy voice).
If puppy does not go potty, I put back into crate. In a 1/2 hour to an hour I re-offer the puppy to go potty.
If puppy does not go potty, I place back into crate.
If puppy goes potty, the puppy has house privileges with me holding on to the leash or placed in ex-pen. (Re-enforce leash training).
I carry treats. Offer treats when puppy move towards you and as puppy follows you.
Puppy leash training had started in my care.
Continue leash training.
I call puppy's name and gesture to come to me. If puppy looks at me, I give a treat.
I step backwards and say "puppy's name, come" Puppy walks toward me, I treat.
If you want to incorporate the clicker, go for it.
I advise, read the clicker book, "Click 'n Connect" by Teach Anders, CPDT. Then practice the coordination of the steps before you practice on puppy.
I have trained a lot of animals in my life. I have learned to train me first. We all do not have the coordination and the poise that we think we do. All animals watch body language more than listening to words. I do a little stretching; I practice the commands, the moves, and the clicker, with no dog present. When I teach an obedience training class each new lesson, I have the person walk through the movements first while there dog is being held by someone.
Puppies and dogs want to please. Be a good leader.
When you are done, offer puppy to go potty.
Place back in play pen or let run out side in your back yard.
I purchase the tall 42" exercise pen. This pen will last the puppy's life time. I like to use the crates when it is time to put your puppy to bed.
Offer puppy potty opportunity every 3 to 4 hours. The first few weeks offer potty very 2 hours.
Time will be extended as puppy gets older.
